Research objective

The study investigated methods for estimating flood discharge peaks using HEC-HMS and optimized Curve Numbers, with the objective of improving event-based flood forecasting.

Study area

The analysis focused on the Brembo River Basin in Northern Italy, covering more than 800 km².

Methodology

Rainfall-runoff simulations were developed in HEC-HMS using historical hydrological observations. Curve Numbers were optimized and evaluated for individual rainfall events to improve simulated peak-discharge estimates.

Calibration and validation

Observed and simulated discharge peaks were compared to evaluate model performance and the ability of the methodology to reproduce flood events.

Engineering relevance

The work demonstrates how hydrological modelling, historical observations and parameter optimization can be combined to support practical flood forecasting and early-warning applications.
